Question
How should a child with adenoid hypertrophy be treated? What are the symptoms of adenoid hypertrophy?
Answer
Adenoid hypertrophy often occurs due to incomplete recovery from a child’s cold or cough, leading to chronic nasal congestion, which may cause facial deformities, affect intelligence, and potentially trigger otitis media. It is recommended to undergo surgery promptly. For mild cases of adenoid hypertrophy, iontophoresis can also be considered. If a child develops the condition after the age of four or five and the symptoms are not severe, observation and waiting can be chosen. Sometimes, the adenoids may shrink spontaneously around the age of ten.
