Question
Can newborns experience seizure symptoms?
Answer
When parents discover that a young child is experiencing seizure symptoms, they should immediately take the child to the hospital. During the journey to the hospital, parents can implement some emergency measures to prevent accidents. These measures include: placing a chopstick or small spoon wrapped in a cloth or small handkerchief between the child’s upper and lower teeth to prevent tongue biting; keeping the airway open, loosening the child’s clothes and belt, lying the child flat with the head turned to one side to prevent vomiting material from being inhaled into the respiratory tract causing suffocation; pricking or pressing on the human middle point with a finger can sometimes achieve the effect of stopping itching; if a child has seizures due to high fever, the child should be placed in a cool place, clothes should be loosened, and a damp cold towel should be placed on the forehead, armpits, and inguinal areas where large blood vessels are located to accelerate body temperature drop. Facial muscle spasms, also known as facial dystonia, have an unknown etiology and may be caused by abnormal nerve impulses due to pathological stimulation in certain areas of the facial nerve pathway, hence also known as primary facial dystonia. Patients usually develop symptoms after middle age, with more women affected. The initial symptoms are often intermittent twitching of the eyelids, which gradually spreads to other facial muscles on one side. In severe cases, it can affect the muscles on the same side of the neck. The severity of the spasms varies and can be exacerbated by fatigue, mental stress, or voluntary movements, but they cannot be controlled or imitated while sleeping.
