Question

A five-and-a-half-month-old baby accidentally rolled off a bed over 70 centimeters high and hit their head. Could there be any concern?

Answer

After a head injury, some cases of intracranial hemorrhage or brain swelling may not manifest until several hours, or even 1 to 2 days later. Therefore, even if no issues are found immediately upon examination, parents should not be complacent. It is necessary to closely observe the child for 48 hours and avoid vigorous activities. At night, parents can wake the child twice, once at midnight and again at 4 a.m., to check if they are awake and if their pupils are equally dilated. This may be difficult to observe in children with low cooperation. Parents can sleep next to the child to monitor their breathing and sleep patterns. If any abnormalities are detected, the child should be awakened immediately to determine if there has been any loss of consciousness. Additionally, within the first six hours after a head injury, eating should be avoided, with only plain water allowed. If nausea or vomiting persists after six hours, eating should also be avoided. If necessary, medical attention should be sought promptly.
