Question

When you find that there is mucus in the newborn’s nostrils, some has been expelled but there is still residue, how should you handle it?

Answer

If the mucus blocks the entrance of the nostril, use a disposable cotton swab to gently roll it out. If the nasal mucus is located deep in the nasal cavity, first drop in physiological saline or other appropriate solutions to soften the mucus, then gently press on the nostrils to loosen the mucus, and finally clear it with a disposable cotton swab. Maintain a suitable humidity and temperature in the room, avoiding excessive dryness. At the same time, provide the baby with sufficient water to prevent heatstroke and cold. The mother should maintain a light diet.
