Question

Sudden onset of facial palsy, one side of the face is numb, the mouth is crooked, and there’s drool. What could be the cause, and what medications can be used for treatment?

Answer

Facial palsy does not have specific treatment measures. Steroid hormones may be effective, but there are no reliable conclusions at present. Eye drops or eye masks can be used to protect the eyes, and facial muscle massage can be performed to promote recovery. If the facial palsy persists, consider surgical procedures to transplant healthy nerves into the paralyzed facial muscles. There are many causes of facial palsy, including infections, otological diseases, tumors, trauma, poisoning, metabolic disorders, and vascular dysfunction.
