Question
Is nausea during breastfeeding a disease?
Answer
Since one month old, the baby often experiences nausea while breastfeeding and sometimes vomits a large amount of milk. Additionally, the baby’s bowel movements are irregular, sometimes happening every other day, sometimes daily, and recently even every three days. Here are some points to note when breastfeeding to prevent vomiting:
- Do not feed the baby when they are crying or upset.
- When using a bottle to feed, make sure the nipple is filled with milk and the hole is not too large.
- After feeding, hold the baby upright, with their head resting on an adult’s shoulder, gently pat their back to help expel air from the stomach, then gently lower them to a side-lying position to reduce spilling.
- Feed in regular intervals with moderate amounts; do not overfeed.
- Keep the milk temperature around 50℃; check by dropping a few drops on an adult’s hand; it should be comfortable and not feel hot. Many mothers simply place the nipple directly into the baby’s mouth during feeding, which can easily cause vomiting. The correct method is to wash hands and wipe the nipple with a wet towel after changing the baby’s diaper, expressing a few drops of milk first.
