Question

Our little baby just turned three months old and sometimes has a loud cough that sounds a bit like a chicken’s crow. It seems quite painful. We went to the hospital for an X-ray, and the doctor said there were no lung problems. What could this be? Is the baby going to be alright?

Answer

If the baby’s birth history is normal, and they are in good spirits, have a good appetite, normal bowel movements, and good sleep, with no other discomforts except for the cough, there is usually nothing to worry about. This might be diaphragmatic spasm. It’s best to observe for a while. Feeding the baby a little warm water or a few sips of milk during coughing can often relieve the situation. When feeding, be careful not to let the baby eat too quickly to avoid swallowing air and causing coughing. Also, make sure not to let the baby’s stomach get cold.
