Question
A four-year-old girl occasionally wets the bed, not very often, but it happens occasionally. Even though she feels uncomfortable after wetting the bed and realizes it, she is unable to control herself before going to sleep. How should this situation be handled?
Answer
Generally, children stop wetting the bed at night after the age of 2 or 3, sleeping soundly through the night until morning, and occasionally needing to use the bathroom due to drinking too much water at night. Most cases of bedwetting are caused by functional or organic issues. Functional problems usually resolve on their own, while organic issues require identifying and treating the underlying diseases to solve the bedwetting problem. However, organic diseases are less common, and most cases of bedwetting are classified as functional enuresis. Qi Zhouchang Jinhua Hospital’s Director Qi reminds parents that it is very important to correctly understand a child’s enuresis issue.
