What Are the Symptoms of Neonatal Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome?

If a newborn is infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), they may experience certain symptoms. These include persistent fever for more than a month, vomiting, and weight loss of over 10%. Some infected infants may also exhibit neurological and psychiatric symptoms such as memory loss, apathy, personality changes, headaches, seizures, or dementia. Additionally, newborns may have persistent generalized lymphadenopathy with the following characteristics:

  • Lymph nodes swollen in two or more sites besides the inguinal area;
  • Lymph node diameter at least 1 centimeter, non-tender, without adhesions;
  • Duration of swelling exceeding three months.
