Question

The neonate developed jaundice again on the second day, with yellowing of the face, whites of the eyes, and body. After being examined at a women and children’s hospital on the third day, the bilirubin level was found to be 13.9-16.0. The doctor prescribed Lactobacillus casei powder and glucose powder, and also instructed to purchase Yinjie Huang (as their hospital did not have this medication). From noon until 5 PM today, we have been following the medication instructions and doctor’s orders, but there has been no significant change in the neonate’s yellowing symptoms on the face, whites of the eyes, and body. Hi, what should I do?

Answer

Newborns often experience a recurrence of jaundice a few days after birth, which can be mitigated by drinking glucose water. Traditional Chinese medicine can also be effective. Jaundice typically resolves on its own within two weeks. If it does not subside after two weeks, it is recommended to have the baby’s bilirubin levels checked at a pediatric hospital. If the levels are within the normal range, continue with hydration and sunlight exposure. If they are not, hospitalization for blue light therapy may be necessary. Wishing the baby a quick recovery!
