Question
Over the past two days, my eleven-day-old baby has been unable to sleep peacefully, whether during the day or at night. After breastfeeding or changing diapers, the baby usually falls asleep within ten minutes and is not easily awakened. However, recently, there have been a few instances where the baby seems restless during naps, with eyes half-closed and opening shortly after, head shaking, and a noticeable “hacking” sound in the throat. The baby sometimes cries and sometimes rocks back and forth on the bed. I’m wondering what’s going on? Additionally, the baby has been having frequent bowel movements, four times in an hour. What could be the cause? Have any related tests or examinations been conducted?
Answer
- It may be due to a lack of trace elements, particularly a decrease in blood calcium levels, which can cause overexcitement of the brain and central nervous system, leading to restless sleep at night. It is necessary to strengthen the intake of calcium and vitamin D at this time.
- The baby may be affected by overheating or undercooling.
- The baby may be restless due to indigestion, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, or an overly full dinner. It is recommended to feed solid foods such as congee or noodles at least two to three hours before bedtime and have a little milk before sleeping.
- When the baby wakes up at night, do not respond immediately; wait a few minutes because most babies fall back asleep on their own after a short period.
