Question
My baby’s left eye has been watering a lot recently, along with some eye boogers. What could be the reason? Thank you.
Answer
This sounds like a symptom of lacrimal duct obstruction. Consider this possibility. Most cases of pediatric nasolacrimal duct obstruction are congenital, with only a few caused by trauma or infections around the eye. Obstruction can occur due to tumors pressing near the lacrimal ducts. Excessive watering and eye boogers are common symptoms. The treatment for the nasolacrimal duct depends mainly on the child’s age. Guidance: For excessive eye boogers, new mothers can use cotton balls dipped in warm water to clean their baby’s eyes twice a day, gently wiping from the inner corner to the outer corner, using two cotton balls for each eye. Additionally, regional medication, irrigation, and probing can be considered as treatment methods.
