Question

Does a child need to undergo examinations to confirm whether they have irritable bowel syndrome?

Answer

The diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome typically requires the following criteria: ① Symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation, accompanied by systemic neurological symptoms. ② The patient generally has good overall condition, no significant weight loss and fever, and only abdominal tenderness is found during systemic examination. ③ Multiple stool routine and culture results are negative (at least 3 times), and stool occult blood test is negative. ④ X-ray barium enema does not show any abnormalities, or there are irritation symptoms in the colon. ⑤ Some patients show increased intestinal activity under colonoscopy, with no obvious mucosal abnormalities, and histological examination is basically normal. ⑥ Routine blood and urine tests are normal, and ESR is normal. ⑦ Exclude history of dysentery, schistosomiasis, and other parasitic diseases, and trial treatment is ineffective.
