Meibomian gland cysts are a type of chronic sterile granulomatous inflammatory condition, previously known as chalazion. They occur due to the blockage of the meibomian gland duct, causing the gland’s secretions to accumulate within the eyelid, leading to chronic irritation and inflammation. Small cysts without symptoms can be treated conservatively. Larger ones may benefit from cold compresses, massage, or physical therapy to encourage shrinkage of the lump, although the effectiveness is often unreliable; recurrent cases may require blood therapy; and larger ones may necessitate surgical excision.
