Question
After taking antipyretics, my body temperature dropped to 37 degrees. Does this mean I am fully recovered?
Answer
Lowering body temperature to 37 degrees after taking antipyretics does not signify complete recovery. If the fever is due to the flu, it typically takes 3 days for the temperature to drop and for the need for antipyretics to subside. If the temperature rises again two days after discontinuing the medication, it indicates that full recovery has not been achieved. If accompanied by coughing, sputum production, or chills, it is advisable to visit a hospital for a routine blood test to determine if there is a bacterial infection. If white blood cell levels are elevated, antibiotics may be necessary. If white blood cell levels are normal, it may be H1N1 influenza, at which point isolation, rest, plenty of fluids, avoidance of spicy foods, and continued use of antipyretics should be practiced.
