Question

My child is ten years old and has been wetting the bed recently. I would like to inquire about the possible causes?

Answer

Enuresis can be categorized into primary and secondary types. Primary enuresis is more common, often with a family hereditary tendency and no organic lesions. Secondary enuresis is usually caused by systemic diseases or urinary tract diseases, such as diabetes, diabetes insipidus, and others. Other possible causes include intellectual disability, neuro-psychological trauma, urinary tract malformations, infections (especially cystitis and urethritis). The drug treatment for primary enuresis is effective, commonly using desmopressin to increase urine output. For secondary enuresis, once the primary disease is resolved, the symptoms usually disappear accordingly.
