Question

On April 1st, 2013, the child started having a high fever in the morning. We went to the hospital for a follow-up visit, and after taking fever-reducing medicine, the body temperature dropped. However, 4 or 5 hours later, the fever started again! After that, I took 6 days of intravenous ceftriaxone, but the fever did not subside; at its highest, it reached 39.5 degrees Celsius. But as soon as I took fever-reducing medication, it would come down again, and then it would start to burn after a while. The blood test showed slight anemia but not severe. The X-ray of the lungs was also normal. It’s been up and down with low-grade fever for 7 days now. Previous treatment and effects: A few days ago, the child had a fever and was hospitalized for several days and then recovered. Assistance needed: I want to ask what could be the cause of the persistent high fever. Shouldn’t I take the child to a larger hospital for a detailed examination?

Answer

Firstly, we need to find the cause of the fever, whether it is due to viral or bacterial infection. Viral infections are generally self-limiting; if the child’s spirits and appetite are still good, no special treatment is needed. However, if it is a bacterial infection, anti-inflammatory treatment is required. Anirac actually contains ibuprofen; it should not be taken more than four times a day and is not recommended as a routine medicine unless necessary. However, if the fever persists, it is still advisable to go back to the hospital for another consultation.
