Question

How is neonatal jaundice treated?

Answer

Newborns typically develop jaundice around 2 to 3 days after birth, with the latest appearance not exceeding the fifth day. In most cases, physiological jaundice is well-managed and does not accompany other discomforts. It usually resolves spontaneously within 10 to 14 days after birth. However, if the jaundice levels are abnormally high or persist for an extended period, hospitalization may be necessary. In some cases, doctors may recommend blue light therapy and intravenous treatment. As for post-treatment complications, most newborns with physiological jaundice do not leave long-term complications. However, if the jaundice is caused by certain diseases leading to pathological jaundice, further medical supervision and treatment may be required. Post-treatment complications depend on the severity of the jaundice and the treatment methods. In such cases, using 20 grams each of Yin Chen, Jiezi, Dahuang, and Jin Qian Cao, boiled in water and used for a bath as an auxiliary treatment can be considered.
