Question

What are the common causes of nosebleeds in children? How should one handle a nosebleed?

Answer

Nosebleeds can have many causes, but about half of the cases cannot be pinpointed to a specific reason. The mucous membranes in the nostrils have a dense arrangement of small blood vessels that are highly sensitive and fragile, making them prone to rupture and bleeding. Children in kindergarten age often experience nosebleeds. Before applying medication, first try to expel any blood clots, and then insert a small piece of disinfected damp gauze into each nostril. After blowing the nose (to thoroughly clear the blood clots) and inserting cotton, use your thumb and index finger to pinch both nostrils together, holding the pinch for 5 to 7 minutes.
