Question
What are the causes of a slightly elevated platelet count? I have no symptoms, and I occasionally donate plasma at the blood bank. Today, when I went to donate, I found that my platelet count was 314*10^9, slightly higher than the normal value. I don’t know what the cause is? How can I treat it? I am looking for help to confirm from a doctor what disease could cause a slightly elevated platelet count and how it should be treated?
Answer
A mild elevation in platelet count has little clinical significance, while moderate to severe elevations are mainly seen in congenital and acquired Factor VIII deficiencies. When platelet function declines, the platelet count may compensatorily increase, and after splenectomy, platelet counts in the body may also rise. Generally, if there is only a slight increase in platelet count, it is not considered a disease. It may also be a transient increase that will recover on its own after some time.
