Question

How long does it take for a baby’s fontanelle to heal?

Answer

The fontanelle is divided into the anterior fontanelle and the posterior fontanelle. The posterior fontanelle is a triangular gap formed by the edges of the parietal and occipital bones, which is already quite small at birth and closes by about 6-8 weeks after birth. The anterior fontanelle is a rhomboid gap formed by the edges of the parietal and frontal bones, measuring about 1.5-2.0 cm at birth, and it gradually decreases in size as the skull grows and develops. By around 6 months, it begins to ossify and shrink, closing approximately between 1 to 1.5 years of age. So, there’s no need to worry too much.
