Question

Does the injection site always form a scab and develop a rash after BCG vaccination?

Answer

About three weeks after BCG vaccination, the injection site will become red and swollen, and gradually form small white pus blisters. After bursting, pus is discharged, and a scab will form about one to two weeks later. The entire process takes about two months, which is normal and there is no need to worry. If there is a pus swelling, you can ask the doctor to use a syringe to squeeze out the pus to promote scabbing. This usually does not affect the child’s health. When regional blisters or abscesses occur after vaccination, there is no need to apply medicine or re-wrap. Just keep the area clean, do not wear clothes too tightly, and if pus leaks out, use sterile gauze or cotton to gently clean it up without squeezing. The scab will naturally fall off after about two to three months, and do not peel it off prematurely.
