Question
The sclera of a four-month-old baby has started to turn blue. What’s going on? Is it a lack of certain nutrients?
Answer
A blue sclera, medically known as blue sclerotic ring, is usually associated with chronic iron deficiency. Iron deficiency can thin the sclera, causing the blue choroid beneath the vessels to become visible, thus making the sclera appear blue. This symptom often accompanies the onset of iron deficiency anemia. Moderate to severe anemia patients may exhibit a bluish-white sclera. For the baby’s health, it is recommended to seek medical attention and have a check-up as soon as possible.
