Question
Can newborns and young children heal from CMV infection on their own?
Answer
CMV infection is caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and can be congenital or acquired. The clinical manifestations and prognosis of CMV infection are closely related to the individual’s immune function status. Individuals with normal immune function who contract CMV through close contact with an infected person usually have asymptomatic infections, with some experiencing mononucleosis-like symptoms. Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing surgery (blood products) or organ transplants, may present with multiple organ involvement if they contract CMV or experience reactivation, most commonly interstitial pneumonia, hepatitis, gastroenteritis, and retinitis. Ganciclovir can be used for the treatment of CMV infection.
