Question

Why do infants suffer from epilepsy?

Answer

Epilepsy is a chronic condition characterized by temporary brain dysfunction caused by abnormal discharge of neurons in the brain. The causes of epilepsy in infants can include prenatal factors such as fetal brain development abnormalities, prenatal infections, and maternal medication use during pregnancy; perinatal factors such as birth injuries and infections; and postnatal factors like metabolic disorders, infections, and brain hemorrhages. The most common causes are perinatal respiratory distress and meconium aspiration.
