Question
The newborn baby just turned one month old and has recently noticed that the baby’s bowel movements have decreased, happening only once every three days. Although the quantity is ample and the shape and color are normal, is this considered constipation? Do we need to give the baby abdominal massage or probiotics?
Answer
If a full-month-old baby has bowel movements only once every three days, this can be considered a mild case of constipation. For breastfed infants, their stools are usually more frequent and loose. In such cases, it is recommended to give the baby abdominal massage 3 to 5 times a day, each session lasting for 15 minutes. If the baby does not have abdominal pain and the stool is not dry, there is no need to use a laxative to help relieve the situation. At the same time, ensure that the room temperature is not too high.
