Question
My child keeps on having a fever. Last night, the temperature reached 37.8 degrees, and it dropped after taking medicine. However, the next evening, it rose to 39.2 degrees, and after an hour, it increased to 39.7 degrees. My child is almost three years old, and I’m the only one at home at night. What should I do?
Answer
Recurring fevers in babies may indicate an internal infection. It is recommended to take the child to the hospital for a routine blood test. If the white blood cell count decreases, it may be a bacterial infection and requires antibiotic treatment. If the white blood cell count is normal or low, it may be a viral infection and requires antiviral medication. You can first try physical cooling methods such as using warm water to wipe, cold compresses, or a warm bath, and ensure that the child drinks plenty of water. If the body temperature does not drop within half an hour and continues to rise, and when the body temperature is below 38.5℃, you can use medication to lower the fever, such as ibuprofen suspension.
