Question
My 2-year-old has had a stuffy nose recently, along with hiccups and clear runny nose. They’re coughing a bit, and I’m not sure if it’s due to severe congestion, as they’ve been breathing through their mouth. Their throat is a bit red. Besides constipation with hard, grainy stools that come out only every two days, they haven’t taken any medicine. I’ve given them scallion and mustache water, carrot-meat congee. Along with ginger-comb hot foot compresses, I’m unsure whether it’s due to wind-cold or wind-heat. Am I giving the right remedies?
Answer
Based on the symptoms you’ve described, it seems likely that your child is suffering from a cold causing a red and swollen throat, as well as dry stools. I suggest giving your child symptomatic anti-inflammatory medication such as pediatric paracetamol and cough syrup, along with antibiotics for treatment. If they are not allergic to penicillin, I recommend oral amoxicillin capsules. During this time, pay attention to drinking plenty of water, eating more vegetables and fruits, and avoiding spicy and cold foods. Ensure good ventilation in the room and maintain appropriate humidity levels. Your child should be suffering from wind-cold cold. What you’ve done is correct. Wishing your child a speedy recovery.
