Question

My newborn was admitted to the hospital on the sixth day after birth due to high jaundice and stayed for four days. The baby has been breastfeeding since birth, but was fed formula during the hospital stay. By yesterday afternoon, four hours after discharge, the baby hasn’t had a bowel movement yet. The urine output is normal, and about half an hour after drinking milk, the baby starts to burp frequently. What should the doctor do in this situation?

Answer

If the baby is feeding normally, has strong suckling power, and doesn’t have a bloated belly with normal flatulence , the frequent burping after feeding might be caused by air entering the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth. It’s best to burp the baby after feeding before placing them in the crib.
