Question

My baby is 50 days old and has a bit of jaundice now. There are red rashes on the face that feel rough to the touch, and the area under the mouth is also like eczema. It becomes redder when it’s hot, and there are some scabs. Sometimes it looks a bit like a map with flowers and some hardness. These symptoms only occur on the face.

Answer

Based on the photos, the baby’s facial symptoms appear to be eczema, possibly due to increased sebum secretion and damaged skin barrier. The issue is not serious and there is no need to worry excessively. The following treatment measures are recommended: apply butylhydroxyanisole ointment twice a day or use Vino’s moisturizing cream to increase the frequency of application. For acute eczema, you can clean and wet dress the affected area with physiological saline, 3% boric acid, or a potassium permanganate solution at a ratio of 1:2000 to 1:10000, and use calamine lotion to alleviate symptoms. For subacute or chronic eczema, appropriate corticosteroid creams, tar preparations, or immunomodulators such as tacrolimus ointment or pimecrolimus ointment can be used. If secondary infection occurs, antibiotic preparations should be added.
