Question

Can Polio Be Transmitted to Infants?

Answer

Polio is an acute infectious disease caused by the polio virus, which usually occurs in young children. Some patients may develop flaccid paralysis, hence the name infantile paralysis. It is highly contagious, but once vaccinated, immunity is acquired and it is never contracted. To reduce the risk of transmission to children, it is best to isolate them from patients, avoid contact with the patient’s feces and saliva, and sterilize the patient’s clothing. Most adult patients are no longer contagious.
