Question

Why does a 6-month-old baby’s eyelids swell upon waking up in the morning?

Answer

The eyelid skin is the thinnest part of the skin on the body, so slight edema may first manifest as eyelid swelling. Common causes include allergies, insect bites, vascular neurogenic edema, tumor compression around the eyelid or orbit, lacrimal duct prolapse, eyelid skin laxity, chalazion, and more. In addition to eyelid swelling, kidney function issues may also cause puffy eyelids. Other possible causes of edema include drinking too much water before bedtime.
