Question

My cousin recently had a daughter, who is now sixteen months old. She is usually very well-behaved, but sometimes she cries very loudly, to the point where she has seizures, her face turns blue, and in the worst cases, she even loses consciousness. What is this condition, and how should it be treated?

Answer

When a baby cries and shows seizure-like symptoms, it is usually because their central nervous system is not yet fully developed. When babies get angry, scared, or encounter something unpleasant, they will cry loudly, which increases the excitability of the emotional center and temporarily suppresses the respiratory center. Therefore, the baby often experiences a temporary pause in breathing after crying for a few seconds, leading to blood reflux and purple lips. In severe cases, they may become stiff all over the body, lose consciousness, and have convulsions. Most of the time, this state will return to normal within half a minute, but in rare severe cases, it may last for 2 to 3 minutes.
