Question
What Age Groups Are Prone to Epileptic Seizures?
Answer
Children and the elderly are at high risk for epileptic seizures. Children, due to their underdeveloped bodies, and the elderly, due to their weakened constitution, are more susceptible to epilepsy. From a medical perspective, the aforementioned conditions are often caused by abnormal discharge of brain neurons in children, commonly seen in infants around 1 year old. This is mainly related to the infant’s physical condition and the mother’s preterm delivery. Epileptic seizures can manifest differently in different age groups. Sudden episodes in children are often overlooked, such as infantile convulsions, which only occur in infants with epilepsy. Typical absence seizures, although indicating a possible long-term systemic recurrence, are rare outside of childhood and adolescence.
