Question

A boy, 8 years old, is in elementary school. He recently started complaining of pain when swallowing water. He also has a slight cough. Now, he has a persistent high fever. How should a child’s tonsillitis with fever be treated?

Answer

For treatment, it is first recommended to provide symptomatic anti-inflammatory medication based on the child’s symptoms. In addition to systemic medication, regional treatment can also be considered, such as tonsil crypt irrigation or intratonsillar drug injections. For children with pronounced sore throat symptoms, pain-relieving medication can be administered. If there is a fever, the method of cooling down should be chosen based on the body temperature; below 38.5 degrees Celsius can be cooled down physically, and above 38.5 degrees Celsius, oral antipyretics can be taken. These methods are currently commonly used in the treatment of tonsillitis. Additionally, surgery is also a viable option for children with recurrent episodes, and it is recommended to let the child engage in moderate exercise after the condition improves to enhance immunity and prevent recurrence.
