Question

My child, who is 60 days old, cries every night during feeding and cries immediately after taking a sip. What could be the reason, and what should I do? We’ve gone to the hospital and received some medication, but the crying continues. We’re at our wit’s end.

Answer

Nighttime crying is often due to intestinal colic, which affects healthy infants from 3 weeks up to 4-6 months of age. It presents as regular or irregular crying, bloating, and excessive gas, stemming from underdeveloped gastrointestinal function. Most cases resolve by 4-6 months. For more severe cases, medication can be administered. Oral simethicone can be used to adjust intestinal movement. During episodes of crying, wrapping the baby tightly can provide abdominal compression, making them feel more comfortable.
