Question
Doctor, my child is in high school and he suddenly developed chronic appendicitis. He has final exams coming up. I want to have him undergo intravenous treatment first and delay the surgery until winter vacation. Is that okay? He’s currently on ceftriaxone, but the anti-inflammatory medication is quite painful for him. I would like to ask if it’s possible to administer painkillers at the same time?
Answer
For appendicitis, it is currently not recommended to use painkillers as they may mask the condition. Once symptoms subside, a recurrence may lead to peritonitis, which would still require emergency surgery. It is advised to closely monitor the condition and consider surgical treatment immediately if there are signs of worsening.
