Question
Doctor, my child went to the hospital last night and took medicine at home, but has been running a fever repeatedly since then. Just now, the fever reached 39.5 degrees Celsius, and we also gave them antipyretic medication, but the effect was not good. Should we take the child back to the hospital for treatment?
Answer
Based on the baby’s routine blood test, it is possible that they have a bacterial infection. The percentage of white blood cells, neutrophils, and monocytes are all elevated. The persistent fever may be related to this. When the body temperature is between 37.5 to 38.2 degrees Celsius, physical cooling can be used, such as using warm water to sponge bathe the neck, armpits, groin, and thigh roots. If the body temperature is below 39.8 degrees Celsius, oral pediatric antipyretics or antipyretic syrup can be taken for fever reduction. It is best to also use cefalosporin drugs for inflammation, but must not be allergic.
