Question
My baby was born 5 days ago, and today we went to the hospital for a detailed check-up. The bilirubin skin measurement was 20.4, and the total serum bilirubin was 324. Today, we arranged for hospitalization to undergo blue light therapy and medication treatment. Will the child recover after treatment? How many days will it take to recover? The mother is type B blood, not type O. What is the cause of the jaundice?
Answer
Neonatal jaundice can be fully recovered through blue light therapy and medication. Physiological jaundice may reappear 2-3 days after birth, reach its peak between 5-7 days, and return to normal within 7-10 days. Due to abnormal bilirubin metabolism, blood bilirubin levels decrease, leading to symptoms characterized by yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclerae. This can also be related to breast milk jaundice or indigestion. Since the baby does not have hemolytic disease, treatment with blue light therapy, Chang Le Kang probiotics, and Yin Chen Huang (a traditional Chinese herb) for symptomatic treatment can lead to full recovery.
