Question

My newborn is on the sixth day, and their jaundice level is 22. The doctor has recommended hospitalization. They said the child’s jaundice levels are rising quickly, and they will need to be under light therapy for a few days. Are there any side effects to this light therapy? Will the baby get better after the therapy?

Answer

The baby’s bilirubin level is significantly lower than the normal range, indicating pathological jaundice. Immediate hospitalization for treatment is recommended. The general treatment method often involves blue light therapy, and albumin transfusions may be necessary when needed to prevent recurrence of bilirubin encephalopathy. Blue light therapy may cause rashes and loose stools, but these side effects will disappear spontaneously after stopping the therapy. High neonatal jaundice levels are best treated with blue light therapy; during the therapy, the baby’s eyes and genitals should be protected.
