Question

My six-and-a-half-month-old baby has been experiencing diarrhea recently. After trying other medications without success, we used bacitracin and injections, and sulfonamide gentamicin granules seemed to help. Are there any side effects to taking these medications?

Answer

For a baby with diarrhea, using attapulgite powder is effective and safe. While postponing feedings, it is advisable to give the baby a formula designed to prevent vomiting rather than regular milk to avoid exacerbating the diarrhea. Encourage the baby to drink some lightly salted water to prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea. If vomiting is severe, cefalexin can be given. It is a type of cephalosporin antibiotic with minimal side effects and is considered safe. However, sulfonamide gentamicin has more significant toxic side effects.
