Question

My baby is 2 months and 2 weeks old and has started shaking their head frequently while sleeping at night. Initially, I didn’t pay much attention to this, but recently it seems to be getting worse. The baby is breastfed exclusively, and vitamin D is given every other day as prescribed by the hospital upon discharge. That’s all the baby eats. Should I take the baby to the hospital for a check-up? The baby will shake their head when it’s hot, but I checked and the baby’s hair was not wet. I haven’t treated it yet. I want to know what the cause might be and whether I need to take the baby to the hospital for a check-up.

Answer

There are many possible reasons for a 2-month-old baby to shake their head while sleeping at night, including not being full, discomfort from temperature, overly dry air, a not-so-dry diaper, excessive daytime sleep, calcium deficiency, or discomfort from other diseases. Is the baby full after each feeding? If the baby shakes their head and there’s also a lot of sweat on their head, it might be a deficiency of calcium and vitamin A/D. You can give some cod liver oil and calcium or bone-building granules. The specific cause should be determined based on the baby’s other symptoms.
