Question
A four-month-old baby, exclusively breastfed, often experiences diarrhea. The condition improves with medication but worsens without it. Can mastitis affect the baby’s diarrhea situation? If it is mastitis, can medication be taken? How should this situation be alleviated?
Answer
Breastfeeding may cause the baby’s diarrhea, possibly due to a high content of prostaglandins in the breast milk or residual antibiotics from the milk. First, check the baby’s stool regularly to determine if there is an intestinal inflammation infection, and oral probiotics can be taken in conjunction with treatment. It is also possible that the baby is lactose intolerant, a condition that may gradually improve with the introduction of complementary foods. If diagnosed with mastitis, active treatment should be pursued and breastfeeding should be temporarily suspended.
