Question

My child is 1 year and 3 months old. They had a seizure during their last fever, and now they have a seizure every time they catch a cold, ranging from 5 to 8 times a day. During the seizure, they shake all over and are disoriented, lasting from 10 to 30 seconds each time. What is the issue here?

Answer

This condition in the baby is known as febrile seizures, which come in two types: simple and complex. Simple seizures typically occur during high fever and are a single occurrence within the same illness process, with a shorter duration. Complex seizures, however, may occur multiple times and present symptoms as shown by the baby. For complex febrile seizures, a brain EEG examination is necessary to rule out the possibility of febrile epilepsy, and antiepileptic medications may be required if abnormalities are detected. Additionally, parents should administer antipyretic medication at the early stages of the baby’s fever to reduce the frequency of seizures.
