Question

How do I help a six-month-old baby with artificial suction of phlegm? I always hear her throat making a whistling sound when there’s phlegm in it! What should I do at home to assist her with artificial suction? I have given her various medications but they have not been effective.

Answer

It is not recommended to perform artificial suction on a baby at home. Incorrect procedures may damage the baby’s respiratory mucosa. When a baby has phlegm in the throat that is hard to cough up, it can interfere with breathing. Hospitals usually use specialized suction devices. It is advisable to take the baby to a pediatric or children’s hospital for the procedure to be performed by professional medical staff. If the baby has congenital laryngospasm, calcium and vitamin D treatment can be tried. If it is bronchitis, antibiotic treatment may be necessary.
