Question

A 37-day-old baby has a yellowish complexion, and the doctor’s examination shows that the jaundice index is over 14 points. The previous treatment with traditional Chinese medicine was ineffective. The parents inquire about other ways to improve the condition.

Answer

Jaundice typically appears in newborns 3 to 4 days after birth and usually subsides within 7 to 14 days. If the jaundice symptoms are still prominent after one month of age, further examination should be conducted to check if bile flow is obstructed or if there are liver issues. However, some physiological neonatal jaundice may persist until one and a half months. If the baby is in good spirits, gaining weight normally, and only has mild jaundice, there is no need to be overly concerned and they can continue with normal breastfeeding.
