Question

My baby is one and a half months old and seems to have something in their throat while breathing, often crying and having unstable sleep. What could be the cause? What was the past treatment and its effectiveness? What assistance can be provided?

Answer

If the baby does not have other common cold symptoms like fever, runny nose, sneezing, or coughing, but only makes a sound while breathing, it may be congenital neonatal laryngomalacia. This condition is due to the underdevelopment of the laryngeal cartilage in newborns.

  1. Congenital neonatal laryngomalacia usually resolves naturally by the time the child is 2 to 3 years old, so parents should not worry excessively.
  2. It can be helpful to supplement with calcium to aid in the maturation of the laryngeal cartilage.
