Question

Why does my child always choke while eating? We have taken him to see a doctor, but all the tests have come back normal.

Answer

When adults frequently choke while eating, it could be due to one of the following three common reasons:

  1. Eating too quickly can lead to poor coordination between the muscles of the esophagus and respiratory tract.
  2. Pharyngitis or other respiratory diseases, or early stages of esophageal disorders, can all cause the phenomenon of choking while eating.
  3. There may be a slight problem in the brain region that controls the coordination between eating and breathing.
