Question
When do newborns lose their umbilical cord?
Answer
After birth, the umbilical cord is tied and cut, leaving behind the cord’s stump. Normally, the umbilical cord dries up naturally within 1 day after birth, begins to fall off between 3 to 4 days, and heals on its own after 10 days. Please note to keep the umbilical area clean and dry to avoid bacterial infection. If the umbilical area shows redness, oozing fluid, or an unpleasant odor, it may be a sign of omphalitis, and you should consult a doctor immediately.
