Question

My baby was born premature, and I have been very worried about her condition from the start. Recently, she has developed some symptoms, and I am very concerned, afraid that it might worsen. What should I do if my baby’s jaundice does not improve after medication?

Answer

Your baby may have physiological jaundice. Mild physiological jaundice may only cause the baby’s skin to appear slightly yellow, limited to the face and neck, sometimes spreading to the trunk, even affecting the whites of the eyes. This condition usually appears within 2 to 3 days after birth and resolves within 5 to 6 days. Severe physiological jaundice may cause the entire body to turn yellow, including vomit and cerebrospinal fluid. It is recommended that you consider blue light therapy, which is often effective in treating jaundice.
